Part 16

Jordan didn't believe that Jon could just disappear, but finally had to accept it. He had originally planned on looking for his brother, but his mother had nixed the idea, telling him to leave Jon alone. He was often depressed after that, and Peter began to get sick of it. Chris enjoyed it, watching Jordan's misery with satisfaction. He had been right; Jon didn't speak to Jordan again, and it was much more tormenting. Sam also watched her cousin, worried. She got more and more angry as Jordan got more and more depressed, and finally decided to do something about it.

"Jordan, you're an idiot," she said, pushing Donnie out of Jordan's room where they were talking. Donnie took one look at her face and left quickly, grinning. "You're gettin' to be as bad as Jon was. Thanks to the Knight boys, this band is goin' under. A lot of people come to see you, and you're disappointing them."

"I'm sorry," Jordan said softly.

"You're sorry," Sam said scornfully, her words dripping with sarcasm, then she visibly calmed herself. She needed to try reasoning first. "Jordan, sorry isn't going to make up for the disappointment those fans of yours are feeling because you aren't giving your best."

He sighed. "I know. But I just can't..." He turned away from her. "You just don't understand."

"He's my cousin," she reminded him, clenching one fist to keep from hitting him. "This isn't like you. It's not the end of the world."

"I'm sorry," he said again.

Sam gave up. Reason was not getting through to him. "That's a comfort." She could almost taste the sarcasm. "Do something! You can live without Jon. If not, you're as much an addict as Jon was, only you can't do something without your big brother to tell you what to do!" she snapped. "Jon made his decision, there's no reason for you to pout about it, because you can't change it!" Jordan looked up at her, and his teeth clenched together. Then he pried them apart with some effort.

"You really think this, huh?" he asked, his voice deceptively soft, though Sam heard the anger and saw sparks in his chocolate brown eyes. She took a deep breath.

"Yes, that's exactly what I think," she said, controlling her voice so she didn't shout. She had barely finished before he slapped her. She wanted to hit him back, but thought that might undo what she'd just done.

"Get out of here," he hissed, punctuating his words with a shove towards the door. She left, and the door slammed behind her. She looked at it for a minute, but couldn't hear any sounds inside. With a sigh, she walked to Danny's room and knocked on the door. He opened it and took one look at her.

"Who hit you?" he asked, his dark eyes furious.

"Never mind," she said, sagging against the door frame. "It was for a good cause. Where are we going to find Jon?" she asked.

"I don't know if we ever will. Jordan says his mother doesn't even know where he is," Danny told her, pulling her into his room. No one spoke of the definite change in Jordan's behavior after that conversation.
