But that would have to wait. Right now, he had to get through the insanity that was high school - and survive everything his pack, including and especially his twin - not to mention the rest of his family - might throw at him.
"What are you thinking about?" Wolfgang asked, nudging her shoulder with his. She hadn't even noticed that he'd sat next to her. She grinned.
"Life," she said. "How was your day?"
He groaned softly. "Bad."
"Oliver?"
"Of course." He lay his head on the back of the seat. "At least I have Christmas to look forward to."
Maggie laughed. "It's four months away," she teased.
He turned his head and gave her an exasperated look. "Yeah, yeah," he muttered, but at least there was a ghost of a smile.
"If we're going to work with her today, we'd better get started on homework."
He groaned again. "I suppose," he sighed. "Math first?"
"Okay."
So intent on getting as much homework done as she could before the bus got back to Eden, she didn't notice the first few spitballs that hit her in the back of the head. One finally landed on her paper, and she blinked at it, then looked at Wolfgang. The frustrated look on his face mirrored what her face felt like, and she couldn't stop her giggles. Wolfgang's incredulous look only made it worse, and she burst into laughter.
He finally laughed as well, and shook his head. "How close are you to being done?" he asked, ignoring the spitballs that fell around them.
"Only a couple more problems," she said. "You?"
"Finished," he said, and carefully cleared his book before closing it. He slid it into his backpack and pulled out another book.
The intermittent hail of spitballs continued, but Maggie ignored it, moving on to read the assigned chapter for History. They'd both turned to the book they were reading for English, the last assignment they had to get to, by the time the bus pulled up in front of the General Store. They got off and went inside to find Paul speaking with Grace; he waved at them, and said good bye to her. Before they even left the porch, he ruffled both of their hair, and Maggie rolled her eyes at the number of spitballs that landed on the wooden boards.
"Grace won't like that," Wolfgang said, grabbed for a broom that sat near the door, and swept them up. Maggie held the dust pan, ignoring the taunts from Oliver and his circle of friends that turned her cheeks pink, and followed her father down the steps and to the car.
"Thanks for the ride, Mr. Jourdemain," Wolfgang said as they headed out of town toward the Hartfelt Ranch.
"Have a hard day?" Paul asked.
"Same as usual," Wolfgang said. "How's Heart?"
"Coming along," Paul said. "He's showing some interest in the mares, but there's not much we can let him do right now."
Maggie snorted. "If only he'd go after wolves," she said darkly. "That might make them straighten up."
"I doubt it," Wolfgang muttered. "But it's a nice image, isn't it?"
Maggie started laughing again, and Wolfgang joined her. She felt better for it.
