Eyes

When Cloud had gone, Tifa leaned back against the wall and thought about the two conversations she'd just had, the first ones she'd had face-to-face with Cloud since he'd bowed out of her life. There was a lot wrong with them, but it took her a little while to figure out what, exactly.

The first one, when she'd awoken with his voice in her ears, she'd been so angry - because he was late, because she'd failed to save Marlene, and just because of how he'd left - that she hadn't even looked at him. Hadn't dared, because just hearing his voice had done strange things to her insides. She could feel the heat of his gaze on her skin, and hadn't wanted to meet it.

The second one - the one they'd just finished - was more disturbing. She tried to think what it was that had changed, that…

And it came to her so suddenly that she'd gasped.

All of her conversations with Cloud were punctuated with intense blue. It was hard to miss his eyes, miss the effect the Mako treatments had. She didn't mind it, really, because it was part of him now, and there was nothing any of them could do to change it. But she'd just spent the last five or ten minutes browbeating him into going after Marlene and Denzel, trying to get him to not give up.

He hadn't met her eyes once. No flash of that intense blue, no feeling of heat, nothing.

She sighed and leaned her head back to rest against the wall, then banged it a few times. She wasn't going to let him go without a fight - even if she had to fight his own apathy. She deserved better.

So did he.
