They'd closed the bar for Tifa's birthday, and invited all their friends. Cloud found he'd missed them, and was glad to see them there.

Tifa had pride of place, in the middle of the tables they'd shoved together, Barrett next to her with Marlene next to him; Denzel sat on her other side, with an empty place for Cloud. Across from Barrett and Marlene, Yuffie and Vincent were deep in a conversation that looked far too serious for her - and almost frivolous for him. They had that effect on each other. He had no idea what they might be talking about, either. That relationship - whatever kind it was - never made sense to him, but since they were both happy, he didn't care.

Cid had brought Shera, who was a calming influence on him; he hadn't cussed at Yuffie once yet, partially because of the kids, and partially because of Shera. And Nanaki sat with dignity at the end of the table, looking pleased.

Cloud dimmed the lights and brought the cake out from behind the bar, candles glowing cheerily in the dark as he walked over. Tifa looked up at him, smiling as brightly as Nanaki's tail, as he set it before her. "Happy Birthday," he said softly under the off-tune chorus of the song around them.

She nodded, closed her eyes, and blew out the candles.
