Thoughts on Eternity

Tifa regarded the ring on her palm, the one she'd gotten from Cloud some months ago. It was simple, with a wolf matching the one he wore on his shoulder.

Her mother had told her that rings were a symbol of eternity, that there was no telling where the beginning or the end was. But it was easy with this one, with that wolf's head there.

What had Cloud meant by giving it to her, anyway? It had been just days before he left, his expression unreadable. Was it regret, guilt, what?

Did he wish it had been her on that altar instead of Aerith?

She shook her head. It probably didn't matter. She hoped it didn't matter. She hoped he hadn't left because of that, but it hadn't come up once since the Meteor crisis had been averted. Certainly she couldn't have done what Aerith did.

With a sigh, she slipped it back on her finger - her right hand ring finger, because that's where it belonged, just a ring, it didn't mean anything, and certainly wasn't the symbol of eternity she wished it was - and went to start last minute preparations before Seventh Heaven opened.
