Friends

They were close, that little cadre of friends that Kat belonged to. Maggie came upon them in the park one afternoon, sitting in a circle and talking quietly among themselves. She stopped among the trees, watching them, then turned away before they noticed her there.

She missed that. She'd moved around so much that any friends she'd had before her mother died had lost contact or lost interest. Or she had, she had to admit. There were things that just didn't seem that important.

Although she thought she could become as scatterbrained as her friend had become, probably. It wouldn't take much to focus on hair, and clothes, and shoes, and make-up, and… whatever else. Oh, of course. Boys.

Maggie sighed. No, she could never go back. She'd seen too much, done too much… been too much. Ellen would never consider taking more than the couple of self-defense courses they'd had when they were 14. Not from the sporadic letters she'd gotten from her friend, full of boys and clothes and…. She sighed again.

"What's wrong?"

She looked up and smiled at Chandra, Dean, and Annie. "Just thinking," she said, and felt her spirits lifting as she joined her friends on the picnic table. "Nothing important."

Annie gave her a quick hug. "We were just discussing what we were going to do today," she said. "Any ideas?"

"Hiking?" Maggie asked, and Dean laughed.

"I should have guessed," he said. "What about swimming at the lake?"

"I'm for swimming," Chandra said immediately, and Annie nodded.

"Okay, I know when I'm beaten," Maggie laughed, and they jumped down and headed for the city, back to their houses to change. These were good friends, Maggie mused as she left them to go to her own house. No reason to be jealous of Kat.
