Discipline

The club came out of nowhere, striking one of the "foreign" students in the back of the head. He dropped to the mat, stunned at the very least. Adam Park shouted a stop, and everyone quit moving, except one girl who knelt by her classmate, her fingers on his neck. She looked up as he approached, looking scared. "He's breathing, and his pulse is fine," she said, backing away.
Adam glared around at the rest of the cadets, then touched the communicator on his wrist. "Bulk? Please have Cassie send down a stretcher."

The other man agreed and signed off, and Adam turned his attention back to his class. "Did anyone see what happened?" he asked, struggling to calm himself.

There was silence. Adam looked down at the club, then touched the communicator again. "Bulk, send Zhane down to the mats, please," he said, and looked up.

His students looked back at him, horrified for the most part. There were a couple who seemed to not be too upset about the interruption. He didn't know if that was because they wanted a break, or if it was because they didn't like the cadet laying on the floor.

Cassie arrived with the stretcher, and she and her assistant carefully lifted the cadet onto it. She turned to Adam. "I suggest you look over the security tapes," she said in a low voice. "This is getting ridiculous."

Adam nodded, and turned back to the class. He was glad that at least there hadn't been any blood, although he knew that it was just as bad without any leakages.

Just as Cassie left, Zhane showed up, eyes narrowed. "What happened?" he asked.

"This struck one of the cadets," Adam said, pointing at the club.

Zhane adeptly picked it up - only then did Adam realize he was wearing surgical gloves - and dropped it into a bag. "I'll make sure someone gives us some help," he said softly. "You going to check the security tapes?"

"As soon as class is over," Adam said.

"Good. Let me know anything you find."

Half an hour later, Adam sat at a consol near Lt. Stone, watching the recording of his class that afternoon. He had decided to watch from the beginning, even though he knew about what time the accident had happened. There had a been a lot of accidents this year, and this latest was just one more occurrence that had them all really worried. They were already probably not going to have a graduating class as it was. They were prepared for such an eventuality, but it was still strange to think it.

Something caught his eye, and he leaned closer. Was that… Yes. Someone had brought the club onto the mats, but had done it so well that no one had noticed. He certainly hadn't. He couldn't see exactly who it was, but he watched that young man remove it from his pants, and then, when everyone - including him - was busy, swung it around and let it go. It hit the unsuspecting cadet right in the head. And just as it did, the guilty cadet turned and looked at the camera with a smirk.

Vincent Cory.

Adam sighed and hung his head. "I don't believe it," he mumbled.

This was not something he wanted to bring up to Andros right now; the Kerovan headmaster had enough to worry about. His wife had just lost their first child due to complications - Cassie had said something about a difference in biology - and Carlos had been in an accident last week. It had killed his family, and nearly killed him. He was conscious, but he wasn't doing too well. Cassie had him pretty well quarantined in Medical. Which was probably for the best right now, anyway.

Deciding to put it off a little, he thanked Lt. Stone and headed for Medical, to find out how the cadet was doing. Cassie gave him a piercing look. "Any luck with the security recordings?" she asked.

"Yes," he said heavily.

"Good. Because if Ylaren had been human, he would have been killed," she said flatly. "Whoever did this needs to be seriously prosecuted."

"Agreed," Adam said. "So he'll be okay?"

She nodded. "Eventually. He's resting right now."

"Good. I'm going to talk to Zhane."

He still wasn't looking forward to reporting what he'd found out, but he went down to Zhane's office anyway. The Silver Astro Ranger looked up when he knocked and stepped in. "Adam. How can I help you?"

"I found out who threw the club," he said flatly. "I thought you might want to know, so you can take steps."

Zhane's eyes narrowed. "One of the cadets?"

"Yes. His name is Vincent Corry."

"I see." He hesitated. "Don't tell Andros just yet," he said. "He's got enough to deal with. I'll talk to him, see what his purpose was in hitting Ylaran."

"I don't think he was aiming at Ylaran. It looked like it was a random throw, and happened to hit Ylaran."

Zhane stared at him. "What?"

"He just… threw it. I don't think he even aimed." He paused. "You should see the recording. He actually looked at the camera and smirked."

"Smirked?"

"Oh, yes. I think he wanted to hurt someone, but he didn't care who."

Zhane nodded curtly. "Thanks, Adam."

The next two days went very well, considering how the term had gone so far. Adam noticed an easing of tension, and shook his head. He wasn't sure, of course, if Vincent was the culprit for all of the accidents, but there wasn't really anything he could say. They would find out on their own, if it wasn't. And there was nothing better than an unexpected attack to help you keep your guard up when you shouldn't let it down.

It did turn out to be him, however, as Andros announced the next morning at a general assembly. The Headmaster was still looking haunted; Adam figured he would until Ashley was much better, and Carlos had recovered more. At least, though, this part of the stress was solved, and he could focus his energy on other things.

It didn't sit well with him, though. He didn't know why, but there was a feeling of… discomfort when he thought of Vincent Corry, and wondered, sometimes when he couldn't sleep, if there might have been something more than the reason he'd given them for all the accidents he'd caused.

And then Carlos disappeared, and he thought no more of Vincent Corry.
