Cooking Lesson

Tifa's cooking had been one - a small one at that - of the things Cloud had missed while he was in his self-exile. She put so much care into the food she made, and, to his relief, never made fun of his attempts. Those were pitiful, truly; he'd never learned to cook, being too young at home, and too… much someone else after he'd left.

It had been a nice surprise when she'd offered to help him learn to cook something simple, something that would help keep them alive and going when Seventh Heaven was too busy downstairs. "You could get help," he suggested during the conversation.

"I will," she said, grinning. "But until then, someone has to keep the children from starving."

He gave a small smile, knowing he needed to contribute more than just his absences, and shrugged. "Okay. When?"

So he found himself in the kitchen upstairs - thankfully unwatched by the children, because he knew it was going to be a disastrous experience - with Tifa on her next Sunday off.

It turned out to be not as bad as he'd thought - oh, the food was horrid, and Tifa had laughed her way to dumping it in the trash - but she turned around and smiled at him.

"So, two weeks from now, shall we try it again?"

He stared at her, utterly confused, then smiled back, unable to keep himself from responding. "Sure," he said.

After all, no matter what they were doing, they were spending time together, and that was all that mattered. Even if he never learned to cook - he'd remember the time spent in her kitchen, watching her try to teach him - and paying no attention at all to the food around them.
