Cloud didn't realize how much he wanted to live until he was flying toward the beak of the Bahamut, his friends behind him and the beast's fireball before him.

Well, maybe it wasn't exactly then, but Tifa's comments before he went to the Forgotten City, his conversation with Vincent there - not to mention the look in Tifa's eyes seconds ago - all contributed and made him realize that yes, he did want to live.

Those thoughts were on the forefront of his mind as he splashed into the fireball, eventually crowded out by the pain of the spell that pressed in around him -

Until he saw Aerith, and suddenly it was all there, so urgent that it was almost more painful than the spell had been.

She smiled, as if she could read his mind, and took his hand, and there seemed to be a promise in the spirit energy that flowed into him, easing the pain in his arm even as he broke through the other side of the fireball and got ready to kill the monster ahead of him.
