Anniversary

Kamio Akira burst into the front doors of his dorm at St. Benedicts and raced for the stairs, cursing himself for being so late. He knew Shinji was going to have nightmares due to that paper he'd had to write - stupid topic! - and he'd wanted to be back earlier than this.

Reaching the fifth floor, he went to Shinji's door, knocked, and then kept himself from trying the doorknob. He stood there for a long time - long enough for him to catch his breath - but finally, Shinji opened the door.

"I'm sorry, Shinji," he said immediately. "I got caught up…." He stopped and shook his head. "I'm sorry."

Shinji stared at him, face impassive, but then backed away and let him in. Akira followed and stood in the center of the room for a moment as Shinji shut the door, and then returned to stand in front of him.

Three months today. Three months they'd been dating, and Akira was still afraid of scaring his boyfriend off. "Say something?"

Shinji stepped closer, and Akira wrapped him in a hug. "I'm just glad you're here now." He was trembling.

"Yeah," Akira said, and felt his own shoulders loosen. "Are you okay?"

Shinji's tremors eased. "I am now," he said. "Can we sit down? I mean, this is going to get uncomfortable in a while, and we have practice tomorrow…."

"Yes," Akira said when Shinji paused for breath. Oh, he did not want to think about practice tomorrow.

His boyfriend looked at him. Akira smiled at his nearly impassive expression - few people could read Shinji, and not many even tried - and brushed his fingers across Shinji's cheek. Shinji closed his eyes and leaned into the touch.

It was bad, then. Akira leaned forward and kissed Shinji gently.

They settled on Shinji's bed moments later, Akira's back against the wall, Shinji securely in his arms, leaning back against him.

His plans for their anniversary could wait. Tachi… Kippei would understand - probably already knew. This was much more important.
