Writer's Note: I'm not entirely sure where the idea for this came from, although I'm fairly sure it didn't show up in the shower. But the idea haunted me for a while, and I finally sat down and wrote it. The dichotomy was just too much not to write.

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Backstreet Boys or New Kids on the Block (other than being a huge fan from very far away), their families or their management.

Past Meets Future

Future

Jonathan Knight leaned back in his chair and then, in a moment of indulgence, put his feet up on his desk, crossed at the ankles. He closed his eyes and hummed for a while, enjoying the last few minutes of his lunch.

In spite of himself, however, his mind drifted to this afternoon, and his only appointment. Paige had shown up at his office door two days ago, a confused look on her face and papers in her hand. "That was the weirdest appointment I've ever made," she'd said. "Someone's coming in from out of town. Here's what they're looking for."

"Someone?" he'd repeated, taking fax pages she'd offered.

"Someone. They didn't leave a name."

With a sigh, Jonathan set his feet back on the floor and reached for the folder sitting on the corner of his desk. He pulled it closer to him and began flipping through the research he'd done for this afternoon.

The weird thing was, it all felt familiar. What this person was looking for was much like the house he'd looked for almost ten years ago (was it really so long ago?). His mind drifted a little, then, and he realized how long it had been since he'd talked to any of them, including Jordan. That was disturbing. Before he could reach for the phone and leave his brother a message - certain he'd never actually reach him - the intercom crackled.

"Your 1:00 is here," Paige said, and there was a strangled note in her voice.

"I'll be right out." He got to his feet, straitened his shirt, and started down the hall.

Turning the corner to the lobby, he stopped short and stared. Kevin Richardson of Backstreet Boys was the last person he'd expected this afternoon. It was like staring his past in the face.

He remembered, with a twinge of... homesickness? seeing the exhaustion accompanied by elation in his own face. He'd loved doing New Kids, without a doubt, and from the look of it, Kevin loved what he was doing. But there was also relief that he was alone, away from the others. Jonathan knew he had no idea how Kevin felt since Backstreet Boys had been big at least twice as long as New Kids, but he had a clue. Everything before him was so familiar, even down to the stance - Kevin was exhausted - and the luggage for a quick trip.

Kevin blinked, looking almost like he was blinking back tears, and Jonathan smiled as the moment was broken. He offered his hand to the man who represented a piece of his past he wouldn't have given up for anything. "Welcome," he said. "Come into my office."

Kevin shook his hand, picked up his bag, and followed. Jonathan grinned to himself. Jordan would get the biggest kick out of this when he told him.
