Writer's Note: I'm not entirely sure where the idea for this came from, although I'm fairly sure it didn't show up in the shower. But the idea haunted me for a while, and I finally sat down and wrote it. The dichotomy was just too much not to write.

Disclaimer: I am in no way affiliated with Backstreet Boys or New Kids on the Block (other than being a huge fan from very far away), their families or their management.

Past Meets Future

Past

Why Boston?

He could honestly say he didn't know. He'd taken a map of the general area he wanted to live, closed his eyes, and pointed. But the others wouldn't understand that.

Kevin Richardson leaned against the taxi window, staring at the passing buildings without seeing anything. The silence - relative silence, the radio was playing softly up front - was soothing. He almost had room to stretch out, could if he didn't worry about the door opening up.

Thing was, Boston was about the right distance away from Orlando. Far enough to get away from the group but close enough that he could get there pretty quickly if he needed too. And he missed the snow. Christmas was supposed to be white, and there was just no chance of it in Florida. The beaches don't count, no matter what Nick tried to tell him. So, yeah, Boston was perfect.

"Here you are." The cab had stopped in front of a non-descript redbrick building. Kevin got out, grabbed the small suitcase that had doubled as his carry-on, and started up the steps. Before he'd reached the top, the cabby was gone.

He stepped into a small reception area, warmly lit, with comfortable looking couches. In front of him was a young lady behind a small, well-organized desk. She looked up, and he was amused to see her eyes widen and her jaw drop. It only lasted a second before she regained her composure and swallowed. "May I help you?"

"I have an appointment at 1:00," he said.

She glanced down, presumably at the appointment book, and nodded. "One moment." She picked up the phone and spoke. "Your 1:00 is here." She nodded and hung up. "He'll be right out."

Kevin thought about sitting down, but was frankly afraid that if he did, he'd fall right to sleep. He'd been sitting all morning anyway, and it had been a late night. Instead, he widened his stance a little and folded his arms wearily. He hoped he didn't have long to wait.

The man that came around the corner was a complete shock. Only Kevin's experience at keeping his cool when meeting people more famous than himself kept his jaw from hitting the ground, but he did stare. The other man stopped as if struck.

Kevin felt like he was seeing into his own future. The man in front of him was none other than Jonathan Knight, from New Kids on the Block. They were about the same height, but that and their choice of careers was their only similarity. Kevin was surprised and more than a little relieved at what he saw in Jonathan's gaze. The other man was calm, relaxed, and even contented. There was a peace, too, and Kevin suddenly wanted that peace for himself, so much that it took his breath away. He blinked, and the moment ended.

Jonathan smiled widely and offered his hand. "Welcome," he said quietly. "Come into my office."

Kevin shook his hand, picked up his bag, and followed.
